Volkswagen is working on an electric truck to rival the Tesla Semi

Herbert Diess, head of the Volkswagen Group, posted on Twitter four photos that are most likely to be associated with Project Trinity. In the same tweet, he noted that the future of the company will be electric, digital and autonomous, which will open up new possibilities for design.

Project Trinity is a key aspect of the long-term strategy Volkswagen has created to compete with Tesla. This project involves not only the modernization of automotive technology, but also the transition to completely new electronics and manufacturing processes. That is, with the help of this strategy, the German manufacturer plans to take a leading position in the world market.

The teaser for Project Trinity was released by Volkswagen on March 5, 2021. Gustavo Henrique Ruffo, a senior analyst at InsideEVs, noted that the car’s profile from Diss’ publication is very similar to the company’s new model. Most likely, it will be an electric truck, as Diess recently said that fuel cell trucks running on clean hydrogen are still an unfulfilled dream.

In addition, the executive said that only 1,000 dedicated charging stations would be required on major European routes to travel on electricity from north to south and west to east. It turns out that Volkswagen trucks can actually be powered by batteries. At this point, it’s hard to predict how long these giant battery packs will last a quick charge at least once a day for truckers. However, if a company plans to launch an electric truck on the road, then it has complete confidence in its technology.

Presumably, Volkswagen’s new truck will compete with the Tesla Semi Truck, an electric truck powered by four independent engines. The maximum load of the American truck is 36 tons, and on a full charge it can travel 480 km. Tesla Semi will take only 5 seconds to accelerate to a hundred. Musk assures that the truck is capable of driving more than 1.5 million km without breakdowns. Whether the performance of the Volkswagen truck will outperform the Tesla or not is currently unknown. However, Diess said that the German manufacturer intends to grab market share from the American company as soon as it strengthens its leading position in Europe.
