Volkswagen wants to develop chips together with STMicroelectronics

The software division of Volkswagen AG (Cariad) plans to start developing chips in collaboration with major European semiconductor manufacturer STMicroelectronics. The German automaker wants to use future chips for a single cross-brand software platform.

The agreement stipulates that VW and STMicroelectronics will source key components from the world’s leading chipmaker TSMC. The semiconductor supply chain is currently being formed, the company said. They will be used to produce exactly the kind of chips that cars need. It is planned to provide supplies for many years to come.

Volkswagen Cariad was created in 2020 to bring together software for VW vehicles. His main goal today is to create a single software platform for the Trinity project by 2026, which is based on the development of the next generation of electric vehicles on the new SSP modular platform. In May of this year, Qualcomm agreed to help Cariad with automated driving applications. Then it was said that Qualcomm chips would be used in VW cars.

However, Cariad ran into difficulties. The division released software for the VW ID series of electric vehicles, the first model of which debuted with missing features. Developing a premium software architecture for the Audi and Porsche brands has also been hampered by attendant issues.
