THE Ukrainian chairman Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed her initiative in his speech last night (11/1). Poland to send to the Ukrainian armed forces Leopard 2 tanks and its Lithuania to grant anti-aircraft systems, in order to deal more effectively with the Russian attacks.
“Many thanks to (Polish Andrzej) Duda’s president, the Polish government and all our Polish friends,” Mr Zelenskiy said after talks with the Pole as well as his Lithuanian counterpart Gitanas Nowseda in the western city of Lviv .
Western-made tanks will “level up” the capabilities of the Ukrainian army, he assured.
Mr Duda said after the leaders’ meeting that Warsaw had decided to offer Leopard 2 tanks to form an armored brigade, and wanted more from a “coalition”. In the Polish army, the tank group consists of 14 tanks.
Mr Duda acknowledged that the supply was subject to “a whole series of formal arrangements and approvals”.
Leopard 2s are produced by the German arms industry; Berlin approval is required for their delivery.
Mr Duda insisted that Warsaw was seeking to form an “international coalition” of countries willing to contribute such armored vehicles as well..
For his part, Mr. Nauceda stated that Lithuania intends to send in particular more anti-aircraft weapons to Kyiv.
“Our military capabilities are growing and we are doing everything to acquire even more Western-style tanks and strengthen our defenses”emphasized the Ukrainian leader who noted that “Russia will lose when it sees that its ambition is not leading it anywhere”.
“Battles in Solentar continue”
Mr. Zelensky also hinted that Russia does not control the key town of Solentar, ten kilometers from Bakhmut – a town that Russian forces have been trying to capture since July without success.
“The terrorist state of Russia and its propaganda machine are trying to present how taking a part of our city of Solentar – a city that is practically completely destroyed by the invaders’ attacks – is a great success. They are doing this to gain the support of Russian society and to justify conscription and give hope to those who support them,” he said and continued: “The fighting in Solentar continues. Our forces in Donetsk are enduring and holding their positions”.
