Ukraine, while not yet possessing similar long-range weapon systems, has since significantly upgraded its strike capabilities, producing unmanned aircraft and acquiring western weapons such as the Storm Shadow cruise missiles and long-range ballistic missiles known as ATACMS.
Ukraine has carried out raids in recent months on Crimean peninsulawhich Russia seized and annexed from Ukraine in 2014. It has also used unmanned surface vessels packed with explosives to attack Russian warships.
Russian officials also accused Ukraine of last month attacked a power substation and other energy infrastructure, causing power outages in Russian western regions bordering Ukraine.
Last week, Ukraine said it used for the first time ATACMS missiles supplied by the US, causing severe damage to two airfields in Russian-held territory.
In his remarks, Zelensky says that Russia’s actions show that it understands that Ukraine is better equipped now to respond to Russian strikes. “The enemy is well aware of this. First they removed their fleet from Crimea, now they are moving their air force further away from our borders.”
