The Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky once again demanded that his country join the NATO as soon as possible, in the middle of it war launched by Russia against it in February 2022.
He said he had discussed with his Polish counterpart Andrzej Duda on Wednesday about the North Atlantic Treaty Organization summit in Vilnius next month.
“This is exactly the moment when the Russian arrogant assumption that NATO is afraid of Russia must be completely torn apart”Mr. Zelensky stated in his evening speech.
This case “fuels Russia’s aggressive ambitions. We must and can neutralize them”he insisted and assured that Ukraine’s accession would make the military alliance stronger.
He also referred to the preparation of an international conference on the reconstruction of Ukraine in London, stressing that he wants to restore everything that has been destroyed in his country, as this will “defeat” according to him “not only the aggressor, but the very idea of the attack” .
He also criticized the faulty implementation of sanctions against Russia, referring to a missile strike by Russian forces in Odessa. Many components of the missile used came from other countries, he said, and if sanctions were consistently applied Moscow would no longer be able to use such weapons against his country.
NATO has shown a unified stance after the invasion of Ukraine by the Russian army in February 2022, however, it has not yet agreed on a road map for the admission of this country to its ranks. Moving forward immediately seems unlikely while the country is at war, as it would involve the alliance becoming embroiled in the conflict.
