THE Ukrainian chairman Volodymyr Zelensky told International Atomic Energy Agency chief Rafael Grossi today that there cannot be “nuclear security” in Ukraine without the withdrawal of Russian troops by nuclear power plant of Zaporizhia, which they have occupied for more than a year.
“Without the immediate withdrawal of Russian troops and Russian personnel from the station and adjacent areas, any initiative aimed at restoring nuclear safety is doomed to failure”Zelensky emphasized, according to the Ukrainian presidency.
Grossi is expected to travel to the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in the coming days for his second visit since the start of the Russian invasion.
Zelensky and the IAEA director general met earlier today at a hydroelectric plant in the Zaporizhia region, where the Ukrainian president went “to the front line” of the southern front.
“Your role in guaranteeing Ukraine’s energy security is extremely important today,” Zelensky told Grossi, according to the Ukrainian presidency.
The two leaders visited the site of a hydroelectric plant on the Dnieper River that supplies energy to the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, which has been seized by the Russian military and suffers regular power outages.
“They were informed about the measures taken to protect the Dnieper hydroelectric plant in case of new (Russian) attacks,” according to the Ukrainian presidency, which states in a press release that the infrastructure in the area “has been largely destroyed.”
“I had a rich exchange with Zelensky about the protection of ‘the site’ and its workers,” Grossi tweeted, accompanying his message with a photo of the two men.
Earlier, Zelensky in a message on Telegram wrote: “Zaporiziya region. Front row seats. I am honored to be here today, alongside our soldiers,” accompanying his message with a video of him awarding medals to soldiers.
“Thank you for protecting our state and all of us. Thank you for protecting our homes, our territorial integrity and life in Ukraine,” he said, according to a statement from the Ukrainian presidency.
The Ukrainian president also visited an apartment building in the city of Zaporizhia, where one person was killed and three others were injured in a Russian attack last Wednesday.
He also visited a military hospital where he spoke with war wounded and medical staff, according to the presidency.
The southern front is also strengthened after the eastern one
Zelensky from Dnipro, where he was, sent a message to reinforce the military forces in the south, while the same had happened in the east in the previous period. In fact, he announced that due to the major disasters in cities such as Nikopol, where around 5,000 buildings have been destroyed by the Russian attacks “every commander knows how to respond because the Ukrainians feel pain and the Russians must be held accountable”.
At the same time, he announced that there were successes in Bahamut, but also in other areas where “our warriors hold their positions. Ukraine stands strong and will win in the end”the Ukrainian president pointed out.
