Volunteer reports tiredness after countless rescues in Rio Grande do Sul: “we won’t stop”

In the midst of what is considered the biggest natural disaster in the history of Rio Grande do Sul, many volunteers are committed to helping the homeless and victims of the heavy rains that hit the state.

Wagner Zanderlei, a volunteer in the municipality of São Leopoldo, in the Metropolitan Region of Porto Alegre, spoke live with the CNN and described the scenario as one of “war”. He is working on rescues with his wife and an improvised task force.

Tireless Efforts:

Wagner reported that, in six days, the team managed to carry out around 700 rescues, including pets. Despite being tired, he stated that they do not intend to stop until everything is resolved.

“I'm tired, but I feel light because with each rescue I see that it could be my children, it could be my mother, it could be my father, but there isn't, we won't stop, I won't stop, my wife won't stop. It’s going to stop, we all won’t stop,” Wagner said.

Scenes of devastation:

Wagner described shocking scenes, such as people refusing to leave their homes as the water rose. In some cases, it was necessary to temporarily immobilize some victims to ensure the safety of the rescue team. Additionally, he mentioned that the team is also bringing food and water to those who choose to remain in their homes.

Despite the difficulties faced, Wagner demonstrated confidence in the strength of the people of Rio Grande do Sul and thanked them for the support and donations received from all over Brazil.
