Volunteers struggle to contain devastating forest fire in Mexico; look

In Oaxaca, southern Mexico, local residents volunteered to combat a devastating forest fire that destroyed hundreds of hectares on Saturday (12).

The communities have been on alert since Friday (11), after the fire started in Santo Domingo Tomaltepec. According to the Mexican press, strong winds spread their flames to neighboring cities.

Authorities sent fire fighting brigades, and about 80 volunteers joined efforts to control the flames, which have already consumed approximately 500 hectares, according to the state government.

On Saturday, residents blocked a road to demand emergency aid in fire fighting, such as more helicopters and water tanks, local Oaxaca press said.

The State Civil Protection Agency reported that residents of Santa Catarina were evacuated due to intense smoke.

According to a statement from the Oaxaca government, the fire represents a threat to four communities – Santo Domingo Tomaltepec, Santa Catarina de Siena, San Francisco Lachigoló and Santiago Ixtaltepec – and is currently 75% of the fire under control.
