Volvo Cars said last Friday that it has launched an investigation into a cybersecurity breach that has resulted in the theft of some R&D data. The theft may reportedly affect the company’s operations.
A spokesman for the company, which is controlled by China’s Geely Holding, said it had been approached by a third party, but declined to disclose any details.
“At this stage of the investigation, it has been confirmed that a limited portion of the company’s research data was stolen during the invasion,” the Swedish automaker said in a statement.
The manufacturer clarified that the theft does not affect the safety of vehicles or personal data of customers. Measures to prevent further access to confidential data have already been taken, and the relevant authorities have been notified of the incident.
The investigation is carried out both in-house by Volvo Cars and with the involvement of an external specialist.
