Volvo Cars plans to develop an operating system

Volvo Cars recently announced that it will do its own software development for its vehicles. The automaker explains this decision by the fact that “the attractiveness of the car is increasingly determined not by traditional car characteristics, but by the capabilities and functions defined by the software.”

The next generation of all-electric Volvo cars, including the first electric SUV on the new technology platform, will come with VolvoCars.OS. The manufacturer plans to release regular over-the-air updates to help improve vehicles throughout their lifespan.

In a press release on Volvo Cars’ plans, it is said that VolvoCars.OS will act as the umbrella system for Volvo’s electric vehicles. Forming a single consistent software operating environment, it will integrate various operating systems running in the vehicle and in the cloud: Android Automotive OS, QNX, AUTOSAR and Linux.

With the customer’s consent, VolvoCars.OS will provide developers with access to in-car functions through various APIs, starting with the previously announced Extended Vehicle API. We are talking, in particular, about gaining access to data from automotive sensors and cloud functions. It is said that this will allow the creation of new services and applications for Volvo cars.

In addition, Volvo Cars will centralize all of its EV computing resources into a core system that will run its own software. This core computing system, which will first appear on a new Volvo model in 2022, includes three computers. One will be responsible for image processing and artificial intelligence, the second for general computing, and the third for infotainment. Nvidia and Google will participate in the development.
