Volvo is making a strategic investment in Bcomp, which is an innovative Swedish company that develops high-performance lightweight materials.
Specifically, the company uses flax fiber, a biological-based material which, compared to conventional plastic parts, offers significant savings in terms of weight, energy use and emissions. One of the advantages of the material is that it favors design solutions for aesthetic surfaces.
Volvo is focusing on research into the use of synthetic materials containing natural fibers for the next generation of its all-electric cars, while its subsidiary Polestar is also aiming to use Bcomp materials in its next models. It is worth noting that Bcomp estimates that compared to conventional plastic parts, natural fiber-based synthetics are up to 50% lighter, use up to 70% less plastic and have up to 62% lower CO2 emissions.
