Volvo recalls 460 thousand cars: all due to defective airbags

Volvo representatives announced a fairly large recall campaign, during which the manufacturer will immediately affect 460 thousand S60 and S80 cars – they were released around the world in the period from 2000 to 2009. The reason for the recall is that airbags from AutoLiv and ZF, which were mainly installed on these sedans, can, when deployed, cause serious injury to the driver or passengers. Moreover, experts believe that abnormal deployment of airbags can even lead to death, so it is only natural that the manufacturer decided to recall these cars for evaluation and possible replacement of components.

Volvo also said that the airbags at the time of installation met all quality and safety requirements, but over time, especially in a humid environment, this component begins to deteriorate – dust particles form inside the system, which, when triggered, affect the operation of the igniter, increasing the pressure in pillow. Accordingly, the airbag, when deployed under increased pressure, can lead to the destruction of various metal components, elements of which are quite capable of harming the driver or passengers.

At the moment, a fatal case has already been recorded in which the airbag did not work correctly – perhaps this situation was the reason for the launch of the recall campaign. A full recall of cars is scheduled for November 2021 – in total, the manufacturer announced work on 460,769 vehicles, most of which were sold in the United States. Unfortunately, so far there is no information about Russia’s participation in this campaign, but, probably, it is only a matter of time. In addition, it is worth recalling that this is not the largest recall campaign in the history of the automotive brand – just last July, Volvo sent just over 2 million vehicles to service centers due to incorrect operation of seat belts.
