Starting next year, Volvo Cars will use a new generation of high-performance chips from NVIDIA to enhance autonomous driving capabilities in the Swedish brand’s future vehicles. Volvo is among the automakers focusing on self-driving in an effort to compete with Tesla.
For NVIDIA, the expanded partnership with Volvo is similar to the deal with the acclaimed EV startup Faraday Future. Overall, this is a great option for the California-based company, better known as a GPU maker, as such deals will strengthen its position in the automotive industry. NVIDIA’s orders grew by several billion dollars, although in 2020 the company’s auto business revenue fell by 23%.
Under the terms of the agreement, Volvo will receive the NVIDIA Drive AGX Orin hardware platform with a performance of 254 TOPS. This is much more than the current NVIDIA chips used in the company’s cars. This power is needed for the AI and Highway Pilot, which will be activated with a software update as soon as it is confirmed to be safe for specific regions and conditions.
NVIDIA also said it is already developing a next-generation SoC, codenamed Atlan, that will give the car the computing power comparable to that of a data center. According to the company, this chip will have to be used in cars that will appear in 2025.
