Volvo Trucks has announced the launch of a new generation of all-electric VNR trucks for the North American market. They differ from the first generation in an upgraded battery, increased range and charging speed. In addition, Volvo Trucks has introduced two additional configurations for these machines.
Having started selling all-electric trucks in Europe at the end of 2019, already in 2020 Volvo Trucks began to develop the North American electric truck market. By the end of the year, pre-orders for heavy trucks were opened, and their production began in the second quarter of last year. Volvo’s flagship VNR Electric truck was equipped with a 264 kWh battery pack. It charges up to 80% capacity in less than 70 minutes.
The 2021 VNR Electric has a range of up to 240 km on a single charge. Initially, the electric car was produced in three configurations: a van with a gross weight of 15 tons, a two-axle tractor with a semi-trailer with a gross weight of 30 tons and a three-axle tractor with a semi-trailer with a gross weight of 37 tons. 5 t and a three-axle tractor with a semi-trailer with a gross weight of 40 t. The mileage without recharging the VNR Electric in 2022 reaches 440 km.
Buyers of the new VNR Electric will notice a reduction in charging times, with a 250kW charge capable of charging the six-battery (extended range) variants up to 80% in 90 minutes, and the four-battery variant in 60 minutes.
The second generation VNE Electric trucks are now available for order and will begin production in the second quarter of this year at Volvo Trucks’ plant in Virginia.
