Von der Layen: Save energy!

The President of the Commission addressed an appeal to the consumers for energy savings due to the war in Ukraine and the sanctions in Russia in an interview with ZDF.

“Save!”. This was the appeal of the President of the Commission Ursula von der Leyen to the European consumers this morning, speaking on the show Morgenmagazin of the second program of the German public television ZDF. The German head of the Commission stressed that energy saving programs are imminent, mainly for industry, new routes for energy delivery but also the expansion of the use of renewable energy sources as soon as possible. If all this is combined, he said, “we can become much faster independent of Russian gas.”

At the same time, Ursula von der Leyen defended the European Union’s line to continue importing Russian fuel into Europe, despite the war in Ukraine, even though the United States has already announced a ban on Russian oil imports.

Easier for the US to impose an embargo

The commission’s chairman stressed, however, that there was a general consensus among Western allies on sanctions against Moscow, but that on Russian oil it was easier for the US to take such a step than for the EU, because depend so directly on Russia.

As he characteristically stated, an “excessive” rise in fuel prices would “weaken” Europe, emphasizing that the aim is “to achieve the maximum possible result against Putin, but without harming us either.”

The Prime Minister of Saxony, Michael Kretschmer, also spoke on the same show. In fact, as he observes, if Germany were to withdraw from the relatively cheap energy supply contracts, new energy contracts would have to be concluded on much worse terms.
