Von der Leyen: Commitment to additional LNG supply to EU this year is a big step towards decoupling from Russian energy

Reducing energy dependence on Russia can be achieved, among other things, through additional supplies of liquefied natural gas supplies, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in joint statements with US President Joe Biden in Brussels.

“The US commitment to provide the EU with an additional 15 billion cubic meters of LNG this year is a big step in that direction. It will replace the LNG supply we currently receive from Russia,” Ursula von der Leyen said. “Europe will work to ensure steady demand for additional US LNG by at least 2030. We are targeting around 50 billion cubic meters per year.”

The United States has pledged to supply the European Union with an additional 15 billion cubic meters (bcm) of LNG this year, with both sides seeking to increase deliveries to 50 bcm per year over time.

“Looking to the future, the United States and Europe will ensure steady demand and supply for at least an additional 50 billion cubic meters of US LNG by 2030,” said von der Leyen, adding that this would replace one-third of Russia’s gas supplies. in the EU today.

“We have to secure our supplies not only for next winter but also for the coming years,” he added. “Our cooperation aims to support us in this war.”
