The president of the European Commission is in favor of the participation of the West in the next summit of the Group of Twenty (G20) in November in Indonesia, despite the possible presence of the Russian president and the war in Ukraine.
“I think it is better to tell him in person (to Vladimir Putin) if he comes, what we believe and to take a stand,” Ursula von der Layen told German television station ZDF last Sunday night.
Von der Leyen was asked about the idea of a G20 boycott by Western countries and spoke on the sidelines of the G7 in Germany.
“The G20 is too important for developing countries, for emerging countries, to let Putin destroy it,” she said.
“One thing is very clear, it will not be work as usual, that is, normalcy” in relation to Putin, von der Leyen underlined.
Indonesia, which holds the G20 presidency, is set to host the summit in Bali in November.
The country came under strong pressure from the West, with the United States first, to exclude Russia over its invasion of Ukraine.
But Jakarta has resisted, arguing that its position as host obliges it to remain “impartial”, according to its president, Joko Widondo, who also invited Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
If the Western heads of state go to Bali, it will be their first meeting with the Russian president in a row since the Moscow invasion of Ukraine.
“We have to discuss this issue (with the EU Member States),” von der Leyen said.
