Russia’s way of thinking “can cost it a prosperous future,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen told a conference in Munich.
Moscow’s threats against Ukraine could reshape the entire international system, the head of the commission said on Saturday, warning Moscow that its rationale, which stems from a “dark past”, could cost Russia a prosperous future. .
“People are watching with disbelief the largest concentration of troops on European soil since the darkest days of the Cold War, because the events of those days could reshape the entire world order,” said Ursula von der Leyen.
He stressed that China and Russia are seeking a “new era”, as they say, to replace the existing international order, adding that the Kremlin is trying to undermine the whole of European security.
With regard to gas supplies, von der Leyen pointed out that Gazprom is deliberately trying to deliver as few quantities as possible while prices and demand are soaring. For the past six months, Gazprom has been delivering gas to Europe at the lowest levels it could under its contracts, the commission’s president said.
“Today I can say that even in the event of a complete cessation of gas supplies from Russia we are safe for this winter,” he added.
“A strong EU cannot be so dependent on a supplier that threatens to start a war on our continent,” he concluded.
