European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen spoke of tougher sanctions against Russia and increased aid to Ukraine after a teleconference convened by US President Joe Biden.
“World leaders have strongly supported Ukraine. We will further tighten our sanctions against Russia and step up financial and security assistance to Ukraine. Thank you, US President, for convening this important communication.
“We are on the side of Ukraine,” Ursula von der Leyen said in a Twitter post.

The EU will develop the Solidarity Fund for Ukraine for immediate support and reconstruction of a democratic country, European Council President Charles Michel said on Twitter after a teleconference convened by US President Joe Biden. At the same time, Mr. Michel noted the further coordinated response to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine with the US President and like-minded partners.
“We discussed the need for further humanitarian, financial and military assistance,” he added.
