Vote elects “melting face” as the emoji that most represents 2022

An open vote carried out by the “World Emoji Awards” profile on Twitter chose the “melting face” as the emoji that most represents 2022. The result was released on Friday (17), world emoji day. The “award” takes place annually, always in July.

The “face with teary eyes” and “pink heart” were also chosen in the “most popular new emoji” and “most anticipated” categories, respectively.

According to the award website, managed by Emojipedia, the aim is to highlight “which new emojis are loved around the world, which represent the current moment and which emojis users are looking forward to using next. It’s our way of celebrating all things emoji!”

In the contest for the award of what represents more 2022, the “face with teary eyes” was in second place. The Ukrainian flag and the “man with hand on face” also made it to the semifinals.

As the profile explained, the “melting face” is used “with sarcasm”, to “literally talk about extreme heat” and “metaphorically to talk about embarrassment, shame or a sense of dread”.

In 2021, the winner was the vaccine — exactly beating the virus emoji. In 2020, it was the raised black fist — much used during the protests of the Black Lives Matter (Black Lives Matter, in Portuguese), after the death of George Floyd.
