The ballot boxes were opened in Ecuador on Sunday (13) and voters vote to elect the new president of the country in the second round of the elections.
It is expected to be a fierce presidential dispute between the holder Daniel Noboa, who claims to need more time to combat traffickers gangs and boost the economy, and leftist Luisa González, whose election would mark the return to socialist policies that ruled the country for a decade.
Murder, gun smuggling, fuel theft, extortion and other crimes committed by local criminal groups coupled with Mexican cartels and Albanian mafia have fired over the past five years.
All these events as the economy struggled to recover after pandemic and unemployment increased.
Noboa, who has been in the presidency for just over 16 months, ended the first in February only 16,746 votes ahead of the rival, and research indicates that either of them can win.
Both candidates, like Luisa González’s mentor, former President Rafael Correa, asked their observers to prevent possible fraud.
Each has more than 45,000 observers in voting places.
