Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Friday that Kiev had unveiled a plan to overthrow his government next week involving Russian citizens, although he declined to say whether he believed the Kremlin was behind it.
In a press conference given by Zelensky, he said that the Ukrainian secret services had gained access to audio material, according to which people from Russia were trying to entice the big businessman Rinat Akhmetov to take part in a coup against his government.
The Kremlin immediately denied any involvement in the coup, saying it had no plans to take part in it. A spokesman for Akhmetov, Ukraine’s richest man, had no immediate comment.
“We have challenges not only from the Russian Federation and possible escalation – we have great internal challenges. I received information that a coup will take place in our country on December 1-2,” Zelensky said.
Zelensky did not give full details of the coup plan. Asked if he thought the Kremlin was involved, he said: “I’m sorry, I can’t talk about it.”
Zelensky also said that his chief of staff, Andrei Germak, would soon contact Russian officials about the escalating tensions between the two countries. Germak himself said he would contact senior Kremlin official Dmitry Kozak.
