Japan of the last 70 years has never been a country associated with political violence.
Hence also the devastating shock caused this Friday (8) by the assassination of former head of government Shinzo Abe.
Killed by a lone gunman while attending a street rally.
Shinzo Abe was not just a high profile politician in a system where names change a lot, but things change little.
Abe’s name became associated with an attempt to lift the country out of stagnation.
And also part of the post-war status, with a pacifist constitution imposed by the United States.
Every time a high profile political character suddenly disappears, the question remains in the air about the weight of this character – in this case, Abe – in directing events.
Abe was assassinated without achieving much of what he wanted, such as strengthening the role of women, reforming the constitution and making the country’s economy grow faster.
It became a symbol of what could have been.
