Waack: Brics have become China’s contraption

When they were invented by an American investment banker, the Brics had a common denominator. They were called emerging markets with appreciable growth rates.

There were five countries also with a common desire: to be more heard and respected.

Now, the Brics have become a cogwheel of China, which has made the group more than double in size and remain as disparate among themselves as it was before, but with a new common denominator. They are part of an international effort to challenge the world order in which the United States is the predominant power.

The new composition of the Brics bears a certain resemblance to a movement from many years ago, which was called the Non-Aligned Countries Movement. Very unhappy with the international order, but not aligned with the United States or the then Soviet Union, the two poles of the Cold War.

The expansion of the Brics today demonstrates that it is not a non-aligned bloc, but a bloc aligned with the axis formed by China and Russia.

Integrated now mostly by absolute monarchies, a theocracy and autocracies. To which the so-called universal principles of democracy and human rights are relative, or serve only as a pretext for Americans to impose themselves on the world.

The expansion of the Brics under the blatant leadership of China compromises the traditional Brazilian posture of maintaining equidistance between the blocs and their divisions. Not aligned meant having no sides. The Brics have.
