Waack: Countries don’t have friends, countries have interests

Joe Biden and Jair Bolsonaro don’t like each other, but the meeting between the presidents of the United States and Brazil, in Los Angeles, shows once again that countries don’t have friends, they have interests.

In the case of the United States, interest in Brazil increased after the great geopolitical change brought about by the war in Ukraine, a point that was quite evident in several statements by Joe Biden.

In the case of Brazil, the interest is to ensure that the new international order, again in the midst of a cold war, does not leave the country isolated in one of the blocs, a point highlighted by Bolsonaro.

For the rest, the two reiterated their well-known positions.

Biden concerned about the Amazon and democracy. Bolsonaro with what he calls sovereignty and freedom.

And both, when they left the first face-to-face meeting between them, worried about surviving in the next elections.
