Waack: President seems ignorant of how a big economy works

The government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) is entering its third week and has established a kind of routine.

They are senior members trying to better explain something the president said about the economy.

This time they went public to say that Lula respects the autonomy of the Central Bank – which is established by law, by the way – and also respects what the BC has to say about monetary policy and macroeconomics.

Apparently, they did not agree with Lula, who returned to criticize the autonomy of the Central Bank.

And, to boot, the level of interest rates and the general concern of economic agents on issues involving public debt and expenditure control.

It is not uncommon anywhere for the head of government to get involved with the Central Bank or with interest rates or with anyone who criticizes his plans.

In the case of Lula, with whom he criticizes the expansion of spending without matching revenues.

The question involving Lula’s speeches is of a different nature.

By confusing investment with spending or downplaying the functioning of institutions like the Central Bank, the president seems to ignore how a large and diversified economy works.

It is curious that Lula has enough experience since his days as a trade unionist to have understood what these monetary and fiscal policy, inflation and interest, production and consumption, capital and labor things are like. Has she learned nothing?
