WAF Awards 2022 awards the best of the world’s architecture

A wooden bridge in China, an art storage facility in the Netherlands and a Buddhist meditation center in Thailand are among more than 250 buildings selected for the annual World Architecture Festival (WAF) award.

Coming from more than 50 countries, finalists will be judged in categories spanning residential, commercial and civic architecture, before vying for the prestigious title of World Building of the Year.

China accounted for more shortlisted projects than any other country, although organizers noticed a sharp increase in entries from India and Turkey.

Some of the standout structures on this year’s list include Los Angeles’ new SoFi Stadium and the famous Koko music venue, which underwent a $100 million renovation following a fire.

The awards will be judged live during the WAF, which takes place from November 30th to December 2nd in Lisbon, Portugal, and is now in its 15th edition. Further awards will be given to landscape architecture and proposed future projects, while the world’s best interior projects will be nominated at the festival’s sister event, the Inside World Festival of Interiors.

In 2021, the World Building of the Year went to Amager Bakke in Copenhagen, a waste-to-energy plant with a roof that doubles as a ski slope during winter. Past winners have included the Zaha Hadid-designed National Museum of Arts of the 21st Century in Rome and the refrigerated conservatories at Singapore’s Gardens by the Bay.
