Wagner Group rebellion demonstrates weakness of Russian regime: NATO chief

The rebellion started and aborted by the mercenary group Wagner against Russia demonstrated the weakness of the Russian regime and the mistake of the Kremlin in waging a war against Ukraine, said NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. this Monday (26).

“Of course, it’s a show of weakness,” he said on a visit to Lithuania. “It also demonstrates how difficult and dangerous it is for President (Vladimir) Putin to rely on mercenaries, who have actually turned against him,” he added.

Stoltenberg also stated that the mutiny of the paramilitary group against Moscow demonstrates the fragility of the Russian regime, but reinforced that it is not up to NATO to intervene in these matters.

“The weekend’s events are an internal Russian matter and yet another demonstration of the great strategic mistake that President (Vladimir) Putin has committed with his illegal annexation of Crimea and in the war against Ukraine,” he said.. “It is not for NATO to intervene in these matters,” she added.

Nuclear weapons

Stoltenberg said NATO was monitoring the situation in Belarus and again condemned Moscow’s announcement to deploy nuclear weapons in that country.

“We see no indication that Russia is preparing to use nuclear weapons, but NATO remains vigilant,” he said, adding that the organization’s deterrence is strong enough to keep its people safe in a “more dangerous world.”

At the same time, Stoltenberg said Kiev will have continued support from NATO.

“If Russia thinks it can bully us out of supporting Ukraine, it will fail,” he said. “We are with Ukraine as long as it takes.”

Stoltenberg was in Lithuania to take part in an exercise that will test the rapid build-up of the German-led NATO battle group in the country to the size of a brigade, a military unit made up of up to 5,000 troops, a scenario to be enacted in case of heightened tensions or a conflict with Russia.

He described the drills as a clear message that NATO is ready to defend every inch of Allied territory.
