Wanted brains on the run: here is the call to work on the challenges of Southern Italy

Over 130 thousand compatriots registered their residence outside the Italian borders in 2019 and are above all young people (40.9%) aged between 18 and 34 years: to reveal these data is the XV edition of Italian relationship in the world 2020 published by the Migrantes Foundation. However, there is no shortage of initiatives aimed at gathering new ideas to stop the brain drain – and not only – towards abroad and bring new valid contributions to support the urgent challenges of some Italian regions.

Born from a collaboration between Scostumat *, Onde Alte and WaYouth with the aim of offering release opportunities for the territories of Southern Italy by exploiting the intelligence of the community and human capital, the call Storti Sud Redesign data is an itinerant project that includes three different stages, each one focused on a specific objective: theschool dropout, i environmental crimes and theyouth emigration.

«We want to change the distorted data to the sound of new ideas, desire to do, territories, connections and human skills. We believe that it cannot be a given that tells a territory, but human capital. This is why we wanted to create a three-day virtual “laboratory” in which different communities, minds and skills could contaminate each other and co-design new solutions to face a common challenge linked to the territory. It is an immersive experience that brings everyone’s energy and interest back to the territories of the South »explain creators of the project.

As already mentioned, the route will include three different stops: the first – from 1 to 3 October 2021 – will affect the territories of the Basilicata and Calabria proposing itself as a contribution to stop the brain drain, the stage in Campani17a and Puglia and then in the islands, in Sicily and Sardinia; everything will end in 2022 with the start of the accompanying path for the selected projects.

From brains on the run to local associations and from local inhabitants to anyone with a concrete contribution that can offer a positive social impact not only for the southern regions but for the whole country, the call is open to all and does not include any cost for participation. The regional stages include a Hackathon and the announcement of winners who will be able to participate in an accompanying path in collaboration with local hubs and local associations.

Among other related activities, moreover, there is also ainitiative dedicated to students – aged between 16 and 19 – attending upper secondary school: a challenge to “ideas blows” in a Policython, supported by WAYouth mentors and experts, aimed at redesigning the Public Policies to be implemented to facilitate and accelerate the recovery of the South.

“Our hope is that moments of contamination such as these will truly produce virtuous initiatives that have the strength and effectiveness of reversing negative trends, such as the abandonment of their lands by young people or the continuous increase in environmental crimes. thanks to the mixture of different professional skills with the experiences of those who live and know the territory, with its peculiarities, difficulties and riches ”conclude the creators of the initiative.

Although participation is free, it is must register as individuals or groups of at least two people: to participate in the first stage there is time until September 26th.
