War in Israel: Cairo peace summit ends without joint communique

The Cairo peace summit where leaders from Europe and around the world gathered today for a conference on developments on the Israel-Hamas front ends without a final joint statement.

According to CNN an official and a diplomat with knowledge of the matter said no joint statement would be issued because of differences between the delegations over wording.

One of them also stated that this was expected, even before the start of the Synod.

What the leaders of the countries that attended the Summit said

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis reiterated that Hamas is not the Palestinians and argued that no military intervention can substitute for a viable political solution.

The President of Egypt Abdel Fattah El Sisi said he had gathered world leaders in the Egyptian capital to find a “road map” to end the “humanitarian tragedy” unfolding in Gaza.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas participated in the summit together with representatives from 34 countries, the United Nations and international organizations. Israel was absent. Speaking to the assembled leaders, Abbas asserted that “we will remain on our land.”

King Abdullah II of Jordan called for an “immediate end to the war in Gaza”, urgent humanitarian aid, rejection of Palestinian displacement and a permanent solution “on the basis of the two-state solution”.

The foreign ministers of France and Germany they said Saturday that while Israel has the right to self-defense, it also has a responsibility to protect the civilian population of Gaza.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres appealed for a humanitarian ceasefire

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa He said South Africans could identify with the plight of the Palestinians in their “struggle to achieve their freedom”.

UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverley said he spoke directly with the Israeli government “about their duty to respect international law and the importance of respecting the lives of civilians in Gaza.”

Japan’s Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa said the international community must not let the war “close the windows of opportunity for peace in the Middle East”

Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira called on the world to avoid any possibility of a regional expansion of the conflict

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock stated that the flames of hatred must not be rekindled, “because that is exactly what Hamas and its sponsors want”
