War in Israel: Enemy forces still on Israeli soil, says army spokesman

“Enemy forces are still on the ground” of Israel and “we are strengthening our forces, especially near the Gaza Strip, clearing the area,” the Israeli military spokesman said this afternoon, vowing that the Israeli armed forces would pursue “terrorists wherever they are.”

“We act to destroy the enemy”IDF (Israeli Defense Forces) spokesman General Daniel Haggari said, stating that Israeli military strikes “hit 800 enemy targets in the Gaza Strip,” after the Israeli military began operations in the Palestinian enclave in response to the surprise attack by Hamas fighters on Israeli territory.

Israel’s security cabinet voted last night to officially declare the country at war to carry out “significant military activities,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said.

Netanyahu had already said since yesterday morning that the Israel is at war after Hamas fighters infiltrated southern Israel. The Security Council’s decision provided the legal basis for declaring the country in a state of war.

Haggari said today that since the start of hostilities, hundreds of Hamas fighters have been killed by Israeli attacks and dozens more captured.

Referring to the questions that have been raised about the Israeli Defense Forces being taken by surprise by yesterday’s attack by Hamas, the Israeli general emphasized: “There are difficult questions that need to be answered and a thorough investigation is required. The Israeli public deserves answers and it is our responsibility to provide them.”

“Right now we are at war. The IDF is fully committed to attacking and defeating the enemy. We will fight first and then we will investigate,” he stressed.

He said that the Israeli armed forces are operating in many areas, stressing: “For the past few hours, our forces have been fighting in the region of Israel’s border with the Gaza Strip to clear the area of invaders. Our military forces are under enemy fire in Beeri, engaged in battles with invaders in the Kfar Aza kibbutz, conducting naval operations in Zikim, fighting in Nahal Oz, Kisufim and other locations.”
