War in Ukraine: 15,000 people missing

About fifteen thousand people, both military and civilians, have been officially listed as missing since it began the invasion of the Russian army on the territory of Ukraine on February 24, according to Aliona Verbitska, her advisor Ukrainian presidency responsible for the rights of soldiers.

“Russia has confirmed that it is holding 3,392 prisoners of war, but in Ukraine some 15,000 people are considered missing, among them many civilians”Ms Verbitzka told the German media group RND (“Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland”), which is publishing her remarks today.

The fate of these people remains completely uncertain, according to her. “We don’t know what happened to them. Are they also prisoners of war of Russia, transferred from occupied territories elsewhere, have they been killed a long time ago?’.

The uncertainty is unbearable for the families of these people, added Ms Verbicka, whose responsibilities include contributing to efforts to locate the disappeared.

Ukrainian authorities have repeatedly reported that entire families are being displaced from occupied territories in Russia.

According to the UN, since the start of the war, more than 13 million Ukrainians have left their homes in search of greater security.
