The mayor of the northern Ukrainian city of Chernihiv said on Saturday that 44 seriously injured people, including three children, could not be transported to safer areas for treatment as the city was cut off by Russian forces.
According to Reuters, the city near the border with Belarus has been virtually surrounded since Friday.
The mayor warns that it has become impossible to evacuate civilians or transport humanitarian aid because a bridge connecting the city with the Ukrainian capital in the south was destroyed by bombing.
Speaking on national television, Chernihiv Mayor Vladyslav Atroshenko said the situation was particularly critical for the 44 injured who needed urgent care.
“They can not survive here because of the severity of their wounds, they need an emergency evacuation,” he said.
He also said that there were still up to 130,000 people without heating, electricity or water in Chernihiv, which he said was under heavy bombardment by Russian forces. The city had about 290,000 inhabitants before the Russian invasion, he said.
