War in Ukraine: About 10-20,000 Wagner mercenaries or Syrian and Libyan fighters fight on the side of the Russians

About 10-20,000 mercenaries of the Russian paramilitary company Wagner or Syrian and Libyan fighters are fighting on the side of Russian forces in Ukraine, according to a European official.

The men “have no vehicles or heavy weapons” and are coming to reinforce Russian troops, the official told reporters in Washington, asking not to be named.

According to this source, they have been observed “Transfers, from areas such as Syria and Libya, to the eastern Donbass region”where Russia has launched the new phase of its military operations. The official said it was difficult to estimate exactly how many of these “10-20,000 men” belong to Wagner and how many are fighters from Libya or Syria.

In late March, the British Ministry of Defense said that “more than 1,000 Wagner mercenaries”, including company executives, were to be deployed in eastern Ukraine to participate in military operations.

The European official also said that within “four to six months” Russian forces would have taken control of the Luhansk region, part of Donbass and a small “land bridge” in the Zaporizhia region. He expects, as he said, that Mariupol will be “completely” destroyed and expressed the fear that the losses will be “worse than Boutsa”.
