Hungary announced on Saturday that Russia had started delivering additional quantities of natural gas to it, following a visit by the Hungarian foreign minister to Moscow in July and negotiations between the two countries.
Hungary’s foreign ministry said trade talks with Moscow had “resulted in an agreement”, prompting Russia’s Gazprom to start delivering “above the already agreed quantities” on Friday.
“It is the duty of the Hungarian government to ensure the country’s safe supply of natural gas,” ministry official Tamás Mentser said on his Facebook page.
In the first phase, an additional volume of 2.6 million cubic meters per day will arrive from the south via the TurkStream pipeline by the end of August, he said, adding that negotiations are underway for September deliveries.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto made a surprise visit to Moscow in July to discuss the purchase of an additional 700 million cubic meters of natural gas.
“In light of what is known about the current conditions of the European market, it is clear that obtaining such a large quantity is impossible without Russian imgs,” Mencer said in his post, referring to Szijjarto’s visit.
We remind you that this week the EU plan to reduce natural gas consumption by 15% in all member countries came into force to deal with the energy crisis caused by Russia’s war in Ukraine.
Some EU countries, however, have derogations from the so-called “voluntary demand reduction”.
Hungary, which relies on natural gas piped directly from Russia, had asked to be exempted.
