War in Ukraine: Agreement on Black Sea grain exports extended

Reaching an agreement to extend by 120 days the agreement on Ukrainian exports of grain from the Black Sea, its Minister of Infrastructure announced on Thursday (17/11). Ukrainian Alexander Kubrakov.

“This decision was made in Istanbul. The UN and Turkey remain guarantors of the initiative” said Kubrakov in a message as reported by the Athens News Agency, expressing his satisfaction with a step “important for dealing with the global food crisis”.

From the side of Turkey confirmed the extension of the deal “on the same terms” that have been in place since July, according to a senior official who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The original deal was signed in July and helped avert a global food crisis allowing the export of food and fertilizers from Ukrainian Black Sea ports. This agreement, which would expire tomorrow, Friday, allowed more than 11 million tons to be exported from Ukrainian ports over a period of four months.

Guterres welcomed the extension of the agreement on the export of Ukrainian grain from the Black Sea

The UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said today that he welcomes the agreement of all sides to extend the initiative on Ukrainian grain exports from the Black Sea.

“I welcome the agreement of all sides to continue the Black Sea initiative to facilitate safe navigation for grain, food and fertilizer exports from Ukraine,” Guterres said in a statement.

The secretary-general pointed out that the UN is “absolutely committed to removing the obstacles that remain to the export of food and fertilizers from the Russian Federation,” a part of the agreement that Russia considers critical.
