The bodies of at least 20 people, dressed in civilian clothes, were found on a street in Butsa, a town northwest of Kiev that Ukrainian troops had recaptured. Russianssaid a journalist of the French Agency.
One of the dead men had his hands tied. The corpses were scattered at a distance of several hundred meters.
It is unknown at this time what he did to cause the deaths. One suffered a major head injury.
In recent days, Russian forces have withdrawn from many communities near the capital, failing to encircle it.
Ukraine announced that Butsa was “liberated” but the town has suffered enormous damage from the fighting. Journalists who went there saw huge holes, apparently caused by missiles, in houses and many cars, completely destroyed.
Sixteen of the bodies found on this road were on the sidewalk or on the edge. The three were in the middle of the street and another in the yard of a house. An open Ukrainian passport was on the ground, next to the man found with his hands tied behind his back with a piece of white cloth.
All the men wore winter coats or cardigans, jeans or overalls and sneakers or boots. Two were lying next to motorcycles, one next to a car. Some were lying on their backs, others face down. It is estimated that the bodies were there for several days.
