War in Ukraine: Captive Russian pilot admits bombing civilians

A captured Russian pilot admitted to targeting Ukrainian civilians, urging Russia to stop attack on Ukraine.

Lt. Col. Christop Maxim Sergeevich’s plane was shot down on March 6 and he was taken into custody by Ukrainian forces, Interfax Ukraine reported. In a press conference on Friday, Christop claimed that he had completed three missions, including bombings.

“In the process of completing the mission, I realized that the target was not enemy military installations, but homes and civilians,” Christop told Newsweek. “But I carried out the criminal order.”

Christop, who served as deputy commander of Russia’s 47th Air Force Regiment, said he dropped FAB-500 bombs containing high explosives.

“I recognize the magnitude of the crimes I have committed,” Christop told Newsweek. “I want to apologize to the entire Ukrainian people for the misfortune we have brought them. “I will do everything in my power to end this war as soon as possible and bring those responsible for this genocide of Ukrainians to justice.”

Christop made the remarks at a news conference along with other Russian pilots held as prisoners of war, according to Interfax. Ukraine has conducted several similar press conferences with prisoners of war in an effort to counter Russian propaganda for the war.

“I also urge all military personnel in the Russian Federation to stop committing war crimes against the peaceful people of Ukraine. “I think we have already lost this war,” the pilot concluded.
