The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), which has the world’s largest particle accelerator, today tightened sanctions against Russia in response to military invasion of Ukraine.
On March 8, the 23 CERN member states suspended until further notice Russia’s observer status for the LHC (Large Hadron Collider), a huge 27-kilometer ring buried underground at the French-Swiss border.
At the end of today ‘s Board of Directors, the Agency announced a new package of measures and “strongly condemned the statements of some Russian institutes that supported the illegal invasion of Ukraine,” according to a statement.
These sanctions include the suspension of CERN scientists’ participation in “all the scientific committees of institutes located in the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus and vice versa”. “All events co-organized by CERN” and the institutes themselves are also suspended or canceled.
The same is true of relations with the Joint Nuclear Research Institute (JINR), based in Dubna, Russia, which held observer status at CERN and vice versa. A new meeting of the Board of Directors is scheduled for June to make a new assessment and report.
