Member States of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (nato ) meet this week in Madrid, Spain , to discuss security issues in Europe amid the invasion of Ukraine by Russian forces. The series of meetings begins this Tuesday (28) and runs until Thursday (30).
To talk about the conflict, the meeting will feature a speech by the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky .
In addition, the alliance will discuss China’s growing influence in world politics and the impacts of climate change.
The event will also focus on writing a new Strategic Plan, which will define NATO’s values, objectives and roles for the next decade – the current version was written in 2010 and therefore the guidelines need to be updated in light of the new world stage.
Finally, members will discuss Finland and Sweden’s membership applications to the organization.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on Monday (27) that the 2022 summit will be “transformative”. “Our NATO Summit in Madrid this week will be transformative, with many important decisions, including a new Strategic Plan for a new security reality. It will be a fundamental shift in deterrence, defense of NATO and support for Ukraine,” he said.
“Our new plan will guide us into an era of strategic competition. I hope it is clear that the Allies regard Russia as the most significant and direct threat to our security. The document will address China and the challenges Beijing poses to our security, interests and values for the first time. It will also encompass an approach to a number of other threats and challenges, including terrorism, cyber and hybrid,” he explained.
This year, Australia, Japan, New Zealand and the Republic of Korea will participate in an alliance meeting for the first time.
