War in Ukraine: Conflict may continue throughout 2022, according to Kyiv

Her advisor Ukrainian presidency Oleksiy Arestovich stated that the war unleashed by Russia on February 24th may continue throughout the year.

At the same time, however, he said that the weapons recently received by the Ukrainian forces will have “Serious impact” in the course of the war from late May or early June.

The war is likely to last several more months, he added. “We must prepare for a long conflict”.

“Even if the ongoing fighting in Donbas stops, it will not mean the end of the war,” Arestovic added..

His position is on the same wavelength as that expressed by senior US and UK officials. US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin was in Germany to talk with his counterparts and equipment donors in Ukraine and according to the US media “prepared the allies for the possibility of a long war”.

Likewise, Lis Trace, the British Foreign Secretary in her speech today is expected to express her belief that Ukraine’s allies must be ready for a long period of conflict. That is why it will push for allies to increase the production of armaments needed by the Ukrainian army to defend itself effectively against Russian invaders.

New explosions in Belgorod

A series of explosions took place in the early hours of today (27/4) in the Russian city of Belgorod, near the border with Ukraine, said the governor Vyacheslav Gladkov, explaining that a fire broke out in an ammunition depot near the city.

According to the official, no civilian was injured in the blasts and fire in the village of Staragia Nelidovka.

Mr Gladkov did not say whether the blasts or the fire were caused by a Ukrainian attack.

This is the second consecutive turbulent night in the area. Last night it was announced that Ukrainian forces had bombed two villages, injuring two civilians in one of them.

The Belgorod region borders Ukraine’s Luhansk, Sumy and Kharkiv regions, where heavy fighting has been raging since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24.
