War in Ukraine: EU proposal for embargo on Russian oil unacceptable, says Budapest

The European Union proposal for oil sanctions against Russia would destroy the Hungarian economy and offer no solution to the huge problems it would create in Hungarysaid today the Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Peter Sigiarto.

Sigiarto, as reported by APE-MPE, states in a video he posted on his Facebook page that, after the talks that have taken place so far, the The European Commission has no solutionso the only way to reach an agreement on oil embargo would be if this applied to oil transported by sea and all Russian oil shipments through oil pipelines were completely excluded.

At the same time, Europe is worried about possibility of energy blackout if Moscow shuts off its gas tap to the EU. The Commission intends to present on 18 May an emergency plan for the actions to be taken in the near future.. The plan also covers, at least in theory, the case of a blackout in the inflow of Russian hydrocarbons into the European market and is based on the Regulation on Supply Security, which has been in force since 2017 – and may, under certain conditions, be extended to oil, despite as regards natural gas by name.
