War in Ukraine: Explosion in an apartment building in Kyiv – Five injured

A shell exploded outside an apartment building in Kyivinjuring five people, the city mayor said on Sunday.

The 10-storey building in the northwestern district of Sviatosin was severely damaged, AFP reporters at the scene said.

Firefighters drove an elderly woman and a disoriented man with facial injuries to the ambulance. Two burnt cars were lying in the wreckage-covered courtyard, which also houses a playground.

“It was fortunate that there were no more casualties,” Svitlana Vodolaga, a spokeswoman for the state emergency service, told AFP, adding that six people had been rescued from the building.

The roar of the bombings and rocket fire could be heard from afar. The hit point is just a few kilometers from the suburban town of Irpin, located on the front line.

“My sister was on the balcony when she was about to be killed,” Anna, 30, a resident of the square, told the Guardian.

Kyiv has been hit by a series of isolated attacks on apartment buildings in the past week, killing a total of at least seven people and setting a building on fire.
