War in Ukraine: Fears of Chernobyl ammunition explosion – warns Kyiv

Ukraine’s armed forces warn of danger of munitions exploding at its decommissioned nuclear power plant Chernobyl. Russian forces in control of the facility should withdraw from the area, Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Irina Verestsuk said today.

Ukraine asked Russia in talks yesterday, Tuesdayto allow the creation of 97 humanitarian corridors in the worst affected cities and villages of Ukraine, she added.

“We urge the UN Security Council to take immediate action to demilitarize the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone and to send a special UN mission there to eliminate the risk of a recurrence of a nuclear disaster,” Verestsuk said.

The Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine also announced that it was agreed to open today three humanitarian corridors for the evacuation of civilians from cities besieged by Russian forces.

Meanwhile the governor of the Chernihiv region in the north Ukraine announced today that it does not see a reduction in Russian attacks despite Moscow’s commitment to limit military operations there.

“Do we believe that? “Certainly not,” said Governor Vyacheslav Tsaous in a message on the Telegram app, as reported by Reuters and the Athens News Agency.

“The ‘reduced activity’ of the enemy in the Chernihiv region meant blows to the (city) of Nizhny Novgorod, including air strikes, and overnight blows to Chernihiv,” the Chernihiv regional governor added.

Bombings outside Kyiv

At the same time, his deputy mayor Kiev Mykola Povoroznik said today that bombings were heard outside the Ukrainian capital overnight, but noted that Kyiv itself was not bombed by Russian forces.

“The night passed relatively calmly, with the sound of sirens and the sound of fire from battles around the city, but there was no bombing inside the city itself,” Povoroznik said on public television.

At the same time in western Ukraine, in the Khmelnytsky region, industrial facilities were hit three times by Russian forces overnight, according to regional governor Serhiy Hamali.

He did not elaborate further on the targets of the strikes, but noted that fires were “detected” and checks were made to determine if there were any casualties.
