War in Ukraine: Fears that children leaving will fall into the hands of traffickers

European Commissioner for Immigration Elva Johansson rings a bell for children fleeing to escape Ukraine and are in danger of falling into the hands of traffickers.

Johansson told a news conference in Estonia that about half of the 3.3 million Ukrainians who fled the country after the Russian invasion were children.

There are a large number of orphans in Ukraine children and children born to surrogate mothers who have not been adopted by their parents. This increases the risk of being abducted or forced into adoption, the European Commissioner said. “There is a huge risk of vulnerable children becoming victims of traffickers”, underlined according to the ΑΠΕ-ΜΠΕ.

So far, very few unaccompanied refugee children from Ukraine have been identified at the EU border, Johansson said, and some cases of trafficking have been reported.
