For the first time since the war broke out with her Russian invasionthe access to beaches in Odessa. The area is littered with hundreds of sea mines as of February 2022.
Many beaches in Odessa on the Black Sea have opened for swimming, although this is prohibited during air raid alerts, Ukrainian local officials announced on Saturday, August 12th.
Odessa, Ukraine’s largest port and naval base, has been regularly attacked by missiles and drones, and the sea area is littered with hundreds of sea mines since the Russian invasion in February 2022.
For the safety of the residents and after incidents of mines exploding on beaches, the coasts were closed to the public.
The decision to open the beaches was made jointly by the city’s civil and military administrations, Odessa Governor Oleh Kiper said, clarifying that the beaches will be accessible to citizens from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Oleksandr, a lifeguard and former diver, who gave only his first name, said a mine net was placed between two jetties to protect swimmers from mines in shallow water.
The opening of the beaches was a welcome respite from the war for people swimming and sunbathing.
“I dreamed of going to the beach and breathing in the sea breeze. We miss him a lot. But safety is the highest priority,” said Svetlana, a resident of Odessa.
