An official of his World Food Program said yesterday Friday (18/3) that the food supply chains in Ukraine are collapsing with part of the infrastructure destroyed and many grocery stores and warehouses empty.
Jacob Kern, co-ordinator of the Ukraine Crisis Program, also expressed concern about the situation in “encircled cities” such as Mariupol, saying that supplies are running low and food trucks have not been able to enter the city.
The ECDC recommends free tests and vaccines for Ukrainian refugees
The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) announced yesterday Friday (18/3) that countries should provide free Covid-19 tests to refugees from Ukraine to prevent outbreaksas more than three million people are fleeing their homeland in the middle of it Russian invasion.
Infectious diseases and wars are often interrelated and the risk of spreading infections could be further exacerbated as Covid vaccination rates in Ukraine were 35% lower than the EU average of 71.7%.
Those leaving the country should be offered a full range of Covid-19 vaccines and booster doses if they do not have evidence of previous vaccination, with an emphasis on those at higher risk of serious illness from the disease, the ECDC said.
Ukrainian refugees have taken refuge in neighboring countries in Europe, such as Poland, Slovakia, Romania, while others are trying to move further west to escape the Russian invasion.
Refugee reception centers are known to be at greater risk of becoming outbreaks. The ECDC stressed that countries should test at these centers and try to isolate those who show symptoms.
Data showing a global increase in new coronavirus cases could herald a much bigger problem as some countries also report falling test rates, the World Health Organization said on Tuesday, warning nations to remain vigilant against the virus.
