The United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council reported this Saturday (26) that the war in Ukraine has already claimed the lives of 1,104 civilians between February 24 and March 25. Of this total, 96 were children.
The organization also reported that the attacks promoted by Russian forces, conducted by President Vladimir Putin. They left 1,754 civilians injured, including 124 children. In all, therefore, adding up dead and wounded, there are 2,858 victims.
Also according to the United Nations Human Rights Council, most of the people affected were victims of bombings and air strikes.
This Saturday, while US President Joe Biden is in Ukraine’s neighboring Poland, Russian forces continued their attacks against the country presided over by Volodymyr Zelensky.
The city of Lviv, in western Ukraine, was one of those hit by bombings over the weekend. A team from CNN at the scene recorded an intense smoke in the place after a series of explosions. The head of Lviv’s regional military administration, Maksym Kozytsky, reported that as of Saturday afternoon (GMT) there were no confirmed deaths.
Explosions were also recorded in Volyn, another city located in western Ukraine. The explosions were heard around 9 pm local time (Saturday afternoon GMT) after four air-launched missiles were fired from Belarusian territory, according to Yurii Pohuliako head of the regional military administration.
In addition to Lviv and Volyn, Russian officials reported that Russian forces on Saturday attacked a nuclear research facility in the city of Kharkiv.
“Currently, it is impossible to estimate the extent of damage due to hostilities that do not stop in the area of the nuclear facility,” the post said citing the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate. Kharkiv is Ukraine’s second largest city and has been under constant attack by Russian troops since the start of the invasion.
Joe Biden’s Criticism of Putin
After meeting with Ukrainian refugees in Poland on Saturday, US President Joe Biden reinforced the strong criticism he has been making in recent days against Vladimir Putin.
“He is a butcher,” declared the US president. Biden told reporters that he spoke to children and heard requests for prayers for family members such as grandparents and siblings. “I remember when you have someone in a war zone, you pray every day, you don’t wait for a phone call,” said the US leader.
The Russian government responded to Biden’s statement and said that the US president’s new comment “decreases the possibility of repairing relations [entre os dois países]”.
