War in Ukraine: How it hits factories in Kyiv – Swiss company lays off 400 employees

THE Swiss Vetropack glass product packaging group announced today that it will proceed to cut about 400 jobs in Ukraine after the a severe blow to the war at its factory in Hostomel -a suburb of the Ukrainian capital, Kiev- an indication of its economic impact Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The glass packaging company, which employs about 600 people at its factory in northwestern Kiev, said it had continued to pay full wages to its employees after the Russian-led invasion of Ukraine and fired them.

But now, with war-damaged factory, which has become non-functional for the immediate future and with hostilities continuing in the area the company announced that will be forced to lay off almost two-thirds of its workforce.

“We know the impact this will have on our employees in Ukraine, but at the moment we do not see any alternative. In our estimation, it will not be possible to immediately resume our production at Hostomel, even if the war is overwhich is not foreseen at the moment “said the head of the company Johann Reiter.

About 4.8 million jobs have been lost in Ukraine since the start of the Russian invasion, which accounts for almost 30% of Ukraine’s workforce, the International Labor Organization (ILO) announced last week that the war led to the closure of businesses, severely affected the export sector and forced millions to flee the country.

Russian forces have seized Hostomel, which is close to an airport, shortly after the February 24 invasion.

Vetropack announced, as reported by ΑΠΕ-ΜΠΕ, that does not plan to close the factory permanently and hopes to open it again after it is repaired. But in the meantime its only functions can be cleaning the space and “protecting and maintaining the facilities”. Without the facilities operating the company said it could not continue to pay the salaries of its employees.

He also noted that he will look for possible solutions for employees who will be fired in the coming weeks stressing, however, that most men of conscription age cannot leave the country.

About 35 employees have so far been placed abroad, and some of them were working at other facilities of the company, according to Vetropack.
