War in Ukraine: In Spain they are afraid of shortages in sunflower oil

Essentially with the… bulletin the sunflower oil is sold in some supermarkets in Spain under the fear that there will be a great shortage of the product because of it war in Ukraine.

“Due to the situation in Ukraine, we have problems with the supply of sunflower oil. That is why it is allowed to buy only three one-liter bottles or a pack of five liters per customer per day “, say many stores, even large chains such as Corte Inglés in Madrid.

The restrictions are deemed necessary as consumers “turned to sunflower oil” causing an “abnormal demand” for the product, according to Asedas, the Spanish Supermarket Association.

Some consumers fear shortages because Ukraine decided on Sunday, in the midst of the war, that exports of certain agricultural products, including sunflower oil, would henceforth be allowed with special permission from the authorities.

Primitivo Fernandez, director of the National Association of Edible Oil Industries (Anierac), assured that “at the moment there is no risk of shortage”. However, Spain imports 68% of all sunflower oil from Ukraine. Ukraine ranks first in the world in terms of production and export of sunflower oil.

At the same time, the authorities state that the country will not run out of cereals either, with Spain importing 27% of the total from Ukraine.
